Most mineral species behave in a manner intermediate to these extremes, and form a mixture of the saturated solution and the lower hydrate in solid form.
On line 1 thenardite, mirabilite and vapour co-exist; on line 2 mirabilite, saturated solution, and vapour coexist; and on line 3 thenardite, saturated solution and vapour co-exist.
At this point the saturated solution becomes a stable phase, and further addition of water vapour will result in the formation of solution at the expense of mirabilite and water vapour.
It can be seen that at room temperature there are three distinct conditions at which mirabilite can be preserved: (1) at the upper phase boundary, that is with mirabilite in equilibrium with its saturated solution, (2) at the lower phase boundary, that is with mirabilite in equilibrium with thenaxdite, or (3) in the range between these points, that is by enforcing an RH at which mirabilite and water vapour are the only stable phases.
For these reasons, storage at mineral- saturated solution, equilibrium conditions should only be considered for the preservation of minerals which are essentially insoluble.
